Two Girls, Buffy and a Microphone A Visit with Kitty & Candy of The Succubus Club

VIPs
and...Torture?
Having done over 150 shows, The Succubus Club was bound to have quite
a few memorable experiences. "We've had so many great moments together that
it's hard to pick them because they fire one after the other. Life has
not been the same ever since I met Candy -- in a good way," Kitty recounts.
"It's been a long
time and I can't remember not doing a show with her," says Candy. "Every show
has been something special whether it sucked or whether it was great.
But I'd say the most memorable are definitely when the VIPs come in
to visit." The success and popularity of the show has enticed
both writers and actors from Buffy and Angel to share
their thoughts. "It has been so intense, especially the moment before
[air time].
"I couldn't wait [for the Buffy series]. I was a big
fan of the movie and I love camp. I love campy horror. ~ Kitty
It has just been such a great experience and we learned so much about the shows, about how they work. It makes us feel closer to these characters
to know the people who are writing these words. I think that has helped
facilitate our love for the show, just by bounds and leaps," Candy states.
Kitty agrees, remembering a particularly humorous show. "Having the VIPs
on has always been so cool, but one
of my favorites was when David Fury [Buffy producer/writer] was here and we got him to
sing. So many of the listeners got mad at
us because they wanted to have him talk about Buffy, but we wanted
him to talk about other things too," she said. "I thought it was great
and so many people criticized us for that. We had a great time and so did he. I
think sometimes when we're really candid with people the fun stuff just
comes out. Andy Hallett, Jane Espensen, Drew Greenberg, and Steven
DeKnight: we've had so many good moments with a lot of the people
just being stupid and candid with them."
Aside from the VIP visits, Candy describes one unique aspect of every show that is universally loved, "Probably my favorite part of every show is Kitty Torture. It is seriously the highlight, in my opinion, of every show, and we've gotten a lot of emails saying the same thing." Kitty Torture evolved from a need to fill a little time and give the girls a break. "This used to be a one-hour show," Candy explains. "We used to do twenty minutes on a new Buffy, have five or ten minutes in the middle for concert dates of Buffy bands and then we started to do a little trivia. We had a Buffy book that had five questions, simple." Candy says, smiling, "So I decided to ask Kitty. It was not torture at the time, it was just trivia. We found that she didn't really remember all the answers even though they were sometimes kind of easy. It eventually evolved. One of our listeners sent us a Buffy pop-quiz book which had a lot more questions. It became something where we're asking 15-20 questions. It got its own segment. Kitty got more frustrated during every question, and it makes it funny," Candy says in amusement. "I keep telling her that but she doesn't believe me. It has become this bigger-than-life thing and it's actually my favorite, and it's not because I get to sit here with the answers and make fun of her. It's because I know for a fact the people at home are having fun while they listen to it." Kitty, not making any excuses, admitts to her lack of trivia skills, "It's so sad because I'm such a hardcore Buffy fan. I've been watching it from day one. I love the show to death, but I'm so bad with the little trivia. I mean, I suck at it, and I don't know why. I just do," she laughingly moans. "And we're glad for it!" Candy adds. "I guess so," Kitty agrees, "It's embarrassing though. But I think that's why it's funny because I so don't know."
An Insatiable Delicacy
It is impossible to
report on The Succubus Club without touching on the subject of pie.
Pie has become an integral accessory to the show. Before
the Posting Board Pre-Party on Friday, CoA joined Kitty and Candy for a gathering of their fans at Mel's Drive-in in Hollywood for "Pie with Kitty & Candy". As numerous faithful listeners of the show gorged themselves on pie, I got a chance to uncover the story behind the
Succubus Club's favorite indulgence. Candy immediately shifts the
attention towards Kitty, claiming that, "Honestly, the pie thing starts
with her. She has a love for pie that knows no bounds. It's unnatural," she teases. "It's kind of scary." Glazed with nostalgia, Kitty relates the origins of it all.
"I've had this thing about pie my whole life," she admits. "I just have a thing
about pie. Who doesn't like pie? Actually, you know where it started?
My best friend Ivy and I; we've known each other for a long, long
time. Every Monday night we had a thing where we would go out to Baker
Square and we'd always get fried cheese sticks and pie. That was the
breakfast of champions right there!" Kitty pauses as Candy smirks
at the unusual combination. "It was usually at 5 or 6 o'clock every
Monday, this was our ritual, pie was our thing. Ivy and I have pie
stories. We would say, 'Is there ever time you don't want pie?' and
we honestly couldn't think of a time." Then, according to Candy, she
mentioned it one day on the show and pie became a Succubus Club
staple.
Fans gather for an afternoon of pie
"Buffy's all about the pie, people!"
Kitty, upon receiving her peach cobbler from the waitress, offered some insight on the sensation of the first bite, "It was memorable. It touched me in so many ways," she laughs. However, to avoid any confusion, she was quick to establish the boundaries of her love, "Actually I like the fruit pies. Peach is my favorite, then berry, like raspberry. Rhubarb, not so much," she muses. "I don't like strawberry or blueberry, raspberry or (boysenberry) poison berry. I'm not a big cherry pie fan." Crust can also be an issue as the wrong kind could hamper an otherwise excellent pie. "I prefer the sort of flakey crust. I don't like those weird -- Graham cracker is alright." As the numerous pies were consumed and the crowd dispersed Kitty offered a final note, "It's all about pie. I've never eaten a whole pie, thank god. I would be sick." Candy adds, "There's really nothing I could ever add to that. Ever."
Being a part of the Succubus Club, if only for a few days, proved to
be quite an experience. CoA made a guest appearance on the previous Wednesday night's radio show where I got to chat up Angel with Kitty while Candy looked on from a new perspective, that of audience member. We enjoyed the time-honored tradition of pie eating, and partied
at the PBP2003. After the festivities were all said and done at around
2:30am, the ladies were kind enough to accompany us one final time
to Mel's and provide a few exclusive final thoughts. "I'm tired. It
was a great weekend. I had a lot of fun," Candy says as Kitty looks at her fried onion rings and turkey soup, "I still love pie, even though we ate a lot of it over this weekend.
The PBP was awesome, but CityofAngel rocks. Who did we want to hang
out with after the PBP? I said, 'What's CityofAngel doing? I want
to hang out with you guys.' We had a great time, this whole weekend.
It was so memorable!" It was indeed, although I'll probably never eat time again for at least a month. Be sure to catch The Succubus Club
LIVE from their website every Wednesday night from 6pm to 8pm (Pacific
Time) on KLBC.org where's there's more Buffy for your bite!
