Take Flight with Juliet Landau
6/2/2008
Talented. Witty. Gracious. Generous. Patient. Polite. Unassuming. Those words may not sum up Drusilla, but they certainly sum up Juliet Landau, the actress who played the insane vampire and undead paramour of Spike. Interestingly enough, Spike and Drusilla were originally supposed to be killed within several episodes of their debut on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. However, fan response was so overwhelmingly positive that the characters weren't killed off. In fact, Juliet portrayed Drusilla for seven years on Buffy and Angel.
In our exclusive CoA interview, Juliet talks about growing up in a family of thespians, how she got the role of Drusilla, her relationship with Spike, her relationship with Darla, her relationship with the Immortal, not to mention non-Whedonverse roles such as reading Three Sisters for the legendary Al Pacino, the documentary she directed about Gary Oldman, working with Tim Burton and her father Martin Landau on Ed Wood, and her new indie film It's Raining Cats and Cats.

Psych 101 ~ Psychology of the Whedonverse
1/28/2008
The Psychology of Joss Whedon: An Unauthorized Exploration (BenBella Books, December 2007) edited by Joy Davidson, PhD, experts dissect the psychological make-up of Whedon's beloved creations.
With inquiries into the series that are both funny and profound, The Psychology of Joss Whedon examines ongoing themes including Angel's mommy issues, terror management aboard Serenity, the effect of deep friendships within a peer group on the lifespan of a vampire slayer and Whedon's ongoing use of radical feminist theory in his work. Essays cover fascinating psychological terrain, like Buffy's serial vampire dating - despite being chosen to kill their kind; the link between sexual intimacy and the genuine possibility of losing one's soul for Angel; and the strange circumstances of characters like Spike and River Tam, whose personalities drastically change as the result of psychological experimentation.
Author Joy Davidson, PhD, is a psychologist, certified sex therapist, is a familiar expert guest on national television and radio, including Oprah, 20/20, and CNN News. Dr. Davidson is also the author of or contributor to 6 non-fiction books for women and couples.

Live Fast, Die Never... ~ A Review of the Angel Soundtrack
5/16/2005
Angel... tall, dark, handsome, the infamous vampire cursed with a soul. He helps the helpless of Los Angeles, fights against the minions of evil and even plays one mean cello. Ok, maybe not that last bit, but just because Angel doesn't have a lick of musical ability that doesn't mean his series didn't feature some amazing music that not only underscored, but heightened every pivotal and emotional moment created during the show's five spectacular seasons.
Finally, that music gets a chance to shine on its own with the release of the first Angel television series soundtrack, "Angel: Live Fast, Die Never" - Music from the TV Series released by Rounder Records on May 17th, 2005. Its brilliance only heightened by the talents of the composer himself, Robert Kral. To get a track-by-track look into this amazing CD, check out the CoA Review.
